United Yacht Transport Discusses Lawful Threat to Superyachts

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 17, 2015 — As the size of yachts seems to be multiplying as each new superyacht makes its debut, existing laws are creating a problem for these massive vessels due to their colossal length. United Yacht Transport, the North American leader in boat transport, reflects on the current situation, and what it could mean for owners, captains, and the community of Fort Lauderdale.

The law currently states that once yachts exceed a certain length, both owners and captains need to acquire a different type of license to possess and operate them. International rule states that if a superyacht surpasses 3,000 gross tons, it is no longer identified as a pleasure boat and is considered a commercial vessel.

A major problem is that captains would have to essentially start their careers from the bottom and put in enough hours to receive a separate license. The Maritime Professional Training School has set up a course in an effort to alleviate this problem. The course seems to be worth the time and money, as it adds you to the comparably shorter list of candidates when yacht owners are seeking captains for their superyachts.

Not only does this law affect owners and captains, but also the community of Fort Lauderdale. This Florida city has been deemed the “yachting capital of the world,” since there is so much transport and tourism in that area.

United Yacht Transport Looks Into the Upcoming Launch of Baltic Yacht’s Newest Vessel

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 30, 2015 — Baltic Yachts is about to debut its newest, eye-catching superyacht. Doryan is making a splash with its modern design and beautiful interior, and you may be able to call yourself the proud owner this autumn. United Yacht Transport, the leader in North American boat transport, takes you inside the brand new yacht.

Cloaked in a bright red finish, Doryan is going to be a sure-fire standout at sea with this bold exterior alone. Doryan caps at 116 feet in length and is armed with ample tank volume at 13,000L. The central focus during the design process was to make this a family-friendly space that supports “long term unassisted passage-making.”

The sleek exterior and cozy interior makes for a simply perfect combination. The inside is equipped with a deck saloon, owner’s suite, master bathroom, gorgeous galley, and a spacious and comfortable cockpit, just to name a few. Teak and Maplewood flooring runs through the entire ship, which also includes three crew and two guest cabins to assure that there is ample space to host family & friends and to house a permanent crew of six.

This superyacht is a vision of elegance, timelessness, and ultimate sophistication thanks to the interior design choices made by Nauta Design. The “lady in red” is an absolute vision that is sure to turn heads and make waves when she sets sail. You can get a closer look when Doryan makes her debut at the Monaco Boat Show this September.

United Yacht Transport Discusses Washington’s Potential Tax Break for Yacht Owners

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 22, 2015 — The Washington House of Representatives has just passed the Marine Tourism Bill and yacht owners anxiously await final approval from Governor Jay Inslee. The bill declares that superyachts will be allowed to dock in state waters for a total of 180 days before a tax is levied. United Yacht Transport, the North American leader in boat shipping, discusses the impact this new law will have on the yachting community.

After 4 years in the making, superyachts registered as an LLC are finally allowed to stay in Washington waters tax-free for approximately a 6-month period of time (a superyacht is typically considered to be a vessel greater than 79 feet in length). While this has never been a problem for smaller boats, as they were already granted this lengthy waiver, this ruling is making waves in the yachting community.

In the past, superyachts were granted a 60 day leeway prior to being taxed 10% of the vessel’s worth. This new regulation permits triple the time in an attempt to extend a warm welcome for yacht owners to inhabit Washington’s waters. The law will apply not only to yachts built in Washington, but also to those that are simply visiting.

As of last month, Florida maintained the advantage in terms of giving a tax break to yacht owners. Paul Haber, president of United Yacht Transport, says “It’s nice to see other states being a bit more flexible in terms of yacht taxes. I believe that the tax break in Florida is one of the driving forces behind a yacht owner’s decision to travel to and stay here for longer periods of time. It has brought great business to us and creates a sense of community amongst yacht owners and the state.” The new law will become effective on September 1, 2015, if approved by the Washington state governor.

United Yacht Transport Looks Inside the Bahia Mar Expansion Plan in Fort Lauderdale

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 22, 2015 — Bahia Mar plans to expand its resort and marina in Fort Lauderdale. The expansion plan is set to cover 2.4 million square feet and encompass a total of 625 condos, amongst many other features. United Yacht Transport, the North American leader in boat transport, takes a closer look into the expansion plan and its impact on the yachting capital of America.

The property is the host of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which is the largest in the world. The expansion proposal calls for three condo buildings, new hotel rooms, retail & grocery stores, restaurants, and more. The 625 condos would be reserved as residential areas, which covers about 1.2 million square feet of the property.

Improvements to the already existing marina and resort is exciting for the yachting community. The expansion will ensure that the marine industry remains as the “epicenter of commerce” for Fort Lauderdale. One goal is to provide an unparalleled experience for boat show attendees to keep them coming back for years to come.

Paul Haber, president of United Yacht Transport, anxiously awaits the changes: “Bahia Mar has been a staple in Fort Lauderdale, and these renovations are sure to bring more tourism and business to the area.” The new and improved Bahia Mar will provide yacht owners with not only an architecturally beautiful place to stay, but with a community that surrounds them including all the amenities that they should desire.

United Yacht Transport Takes You Inside the World’s Most Expensive and Extravagant Mega-Yacht

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 16, 2015 — The Italian Sea Group is currently in the process of developing the “world’s largest and most expensive yacht,” the Admiral X Force 145. United Yacht Transport takes you inside the lavish and luxurious vessel that has an anticipated completion date at the end of this year.

Admiral X Force 145 is the epitome of opulence. Measuring an impressive 476 feet in length, the vessel is deemed the largest private watercraft ever made–that is, if it is manufactured before 722-foot Triple Deuce set to debut in Spring 2018. The size of the massive ship can be compared to that of ten buses, two jumbo jets, or one-and-a-half football fields lined up lengthwise.

Within the lavish walls, Admiral is fully equipped with pools, movie theaters, gyms, a garage, and a bi-level beach club and spa. Admiral takes the word luxury to new heights, comprised of suites donned with crystal chandeliers and marble flooring. Rooms are flooded with natural light that beams through a multitude of floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights, and balconies. Upon nightfall, the perimeter of the boat is lined with lights that illuminate the ship and its surroundings.

While the Italian Sea Group is known for its mega-yachts, producing six yachts in the span of four months last year, this endeavor is record breaking. The curved, sleek lines on both the inside and outside of the vessel exude modernity and opulence. With an estimated price point in the billions, there are only a handful of yachters that are likely to place a bid.

United Yacht Transport Looks Forward to Setting Sail to Cuba

Categories:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 9, 2015 – The news of Cuba opening up to United States travel has been making waves throughout the entire country since December. As America awaits the green light, United Yacht Transport discusses this monumental occurrence and the impact it will make on the yachting community.

Cuba is amidst a transformation, and once Americans are allowed to visit freely the impact on yachting will be colossal. Marina Gaviota Varadero, located at the tip of the Varadero Peninsula, is the site of the largest collection of tourist hotels and beautiful beaches in Cuba. The marina will be Cuba’s largest and most modern, capable of hosting up to 400 boats by the end of phase one of construction and anticipated to hold 1,200 boats by its completion at the end of 2015. With the prospect of being able to freely enter Cuban waters now on the horizon, this beautiful island surrounded by vast sailing waters is shaping up to be a perfect vacation spot for yacht owners.

United Yacht Transport, the leader in North American yacht transport, currently ships to several destinations worldwide, and is eager to add Cuba to its extensive list of destinations. Its location in Fort Lauderdale makes it even more ideal for transporting to and from the beautiful island. In lieu of the typical island destinations, Cuba offers something new and exciting that is sure to lure in travelers and yachters alike. Many of the travel restrictions have been lifted, which will make it easier to travel to and open it up to many more people. The future potential of setting sail for the Caribbean island is looking brighter. Captains and owners alike are poised to set sail as they await a green light from the U.S. government.

Paul Haber, President of United Yacht Transport, looks forward to expanding the Fort Lauderdale based business to Cuba within the upcoming months. “We highly anticipate a large demand for transport to Cuba, and plan to meet that demand as it begins to rise,” said Haber. The boat transport company is eager to be one of the first to offer secure transport to Cuba to its current clients, and prepares to expand its client base in the process.

The Pacific Northwest (In the USA – commonly known as PNW) is a region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and, loosely, by the Rocky Mountains on the east.  The magnetic PNW has endless cruising grounds with some of the world’s best fishing especially known for its amazing wild halibut and salmon.

As you cruise in the narrow passages you will see bears feasting on mother nature’s waterfront wildlife of buffets.  Killer whales that dance and breach over and over, puffs that land on the swim step off your stern, and eagles that catch their pray less than 30 ft. off your bow.   NW cruising is also known as “Mother Nature’s Natural Paradise on Steroids.”  You will want to pinch yourself – as it’s hard to believe or image the wild life adventures right around you!

If you have never cruised in the Pacific NW – you’re missing out on an opportunity of a lifetime.  We look forward to seeing you in the PNW this next boating season!

United Yacht Transport – Yacht Transport is Big Business at Port Everglades

Categories:

fl-yacht-transport-20150410-002 (2)M/Y Solaris Being Brought Aboard the Tong An Cheng

United Yacht Transport – As the captain of a 130-foot yacht, Christopher Campbell usually spends his time at the steering wheel.

But one day last week, he walked the deck of a massive freighter at Port Everglades, waiting for his boss’ yacht to be lifted out of the water and fastened down for a long-distance voyage as cargo.

The boat was one of 27 carefully loaded on top of the nearly 525-foot-long Tong An Cheng freighter for shipment from Fort Lauderdale to the west coast of the U.S. and to Canada.

The price tag for the shipment to Vancouver: About $180,000.

Yacht transport is big business in Fort Lauderdale, an area dubbed the yachting capital of the world. Hundreds of the sleek boats are shipped in and out of Port Everglades yearly on hulking freighters.

Some yachts are shipped in for the area’s international boat shows, where they are displayed for sale and charter. Others come for repair and maintenance between summers in Europe and winters in the Caribbean. And some head out for delivery to owners who bought the boats in South Florida, the country’s leading market for yacht sales.

The business is so big that former New York investment banker Paul Haber set up a company in 2013 in Fort Lauderdale to specialize in just one niche: transport around North America.

Haber said his business, United Yacht Transport, moved about 300 yachts last year and expects to handle even more deliveries this year. The shipment of 27 yachts was his biggest, he said.

fl-yacht-transport-20150410-001 (2)Loading Deck of the Tong An Cheng

But why piggyback yachts on a freighter when they could sail on their own?

Operating yachts across long distances costs a lot more, Campbell said. “To run this yacht from here to Vancouver — with fuel, maintenance, repairs and crew — you’d be talking well over half-a-million dollars,” Campbell said. Fuel alone could cost more than $200,000.

Running a yacht full-out for weeks also causes added wear and tear. And self-powered trips take longer and leave more room for problems.

“Nothing ever goes smoothly” on a long yacht trip, the 32-year-old engineer said. “It’s a floating city.”

The crew also would be spent, running the yacht hard for more than three weeks to Vancouver, sometimes in rough seas.

“Heading up the West Coast is very difficult. There’s no shelter. You’re in open water. It’s pretty miserable, to be honest,” Campbell said.

Loading a yacht onto a freighter for a voyage like that is no small job.

Haber’s company uses a huge crane with an arm carrying a giant sling. The sling is placed under the yacht, and the crane hoists the yacht out of the water and carries it above the deck of the freighter.

Steel columns then are adjusted upward from the deck to meet the yacht, their wooden tops forming a cradle to hold the yacht in place. The columns next are welded into the decks to keep the yacht stable. And giant straps then are pulled over the boat to fasten it down, sometimes with chains attached for extra security.

The process takes time. Campbell expected that loading his yacht would take about 24 hours, with crews working around-the-clock welding down the steel columns onto the deck.

Haber’s company mainly transports yachts in the 50- to 80-foot range, with perhaps 30 percent of his business for yachts 100 feet or longer. His biggest shipment to date is a 151-footer.

Yachts much bigger than that are tough to lift in a sling and often are loaded onto semi-submersible freighters instead.

The world’s biggest yacht transporter, Sevenstar Yacht Transport in the Netherlands, owns some of those submersibles. It hauls lots of yachts between Europe and the Americas, the largest segment of the transport market, Haber said.

Haber said he chose to focus on the less-contested North American market. His company doesn’t own freighters and rents deck space when needed. He aims to be the “low-cost” provider for yacht transport, so he can fill up the deck and leave no space empty.

Most of his company’s deliveries are headed west from Port Everglades, like the 130-foot Oceanfast yacht that Campbell’s boss bought in Fort Lauderdale and was sending to his home in Vancouver.

“Yachts in Fort Lauderdale happen to be about 25 percent cheaper than a similar boat in Seattle, because you have more boats here,” Haber said. That leaves opportunity to transport the yachts as cargo to the Pacific Coast.

United Yacht Transport – With Boating Season About to Start, Longtime Yacht Captain Signs on for New Job With a Salty Twist

Categories:

boatcaptain-charlie-600xx768-1152-48-0United Yacht Transport – Captain Charlie Johnson

With spring-time weather coming earlier than usual this year, mariners are already buzzing about the start of yachting season in the Pacific Northwest. Everyone is getting their boats ready for the coming months ahead. Charlie Johnson, a 35-year yacht captain who lives in West Seattle, just returned this week from the Palm Beach International Boat Show. The show features $1.2 billion worth of boats, from inflatables to super yachts.

Hands-on boating is in Johnson’s blood, but his career is taking a new twist. This old salt is the new West Coast sales director for Florida-based United Yacht Transport (UYT), which ships yachts, new and old, aboard mammoth flat deck ships that are 600-to-700 feet long.

“These transport ships are routed from Florida to British Columbia, with intermediate stops in Costa Rica and Mexico; and from Florida to Europe with some occasional sailings to the Caribbean; and from the Orient to the States,” he said.

Johnson says UYT charters the decks of these vessels and fills them with its own equipment like adjustable cradles and security items such as giant straps, ratchets, turnbuckles and shackles.

“The biggest boat we can handle is 180 feet long. We can take two of those at a time on a 600 foot bulk-carrying ship with open decks that can crane cargo on and off,” he said.

boattransport-600xx640-427-0-27United Yacht Transport Unloading a 130-foot Mangusta Yacht

The average size of yachts shipped are 40 to 100 feet and the cost “depends on the square meters the boat takes up on the ship deck – anywhere between $700 and $900 a square meter.”

Who signs on to transport their yachts like this?

“Lots of folks,” says Johnson. “People who want to cruise places like the Bahamas, or people from Florida who want to ship their yachts up towards Alaska for the summer, or just someone who buys a boat and wants to transport it somewhere else.”

Leading up to this new Seattle-based position, Johnson captained yachts ranging from 70 feet up to 225 feet from Alaska down through Central and South America, up and down the East Coast, all through the Caribbean and Europe, and this includes 23 transits through the Panama Canal.

Most recently, he had been captain of a 157-foot private yacht belonging to a construction mogul from Miami, cruising up and down the East Coast for year.

He jumped at the recent job offer from United Yacht Transport.

“I thought it might be a nice change from running a big yacht, and it would be a great opportunity for me to be home more and live a little more regular life,” he said.

Because of his decades in the niche occupation as a yacht captain, and some project managing of boats being built as well, he is known by much of the community of boat brokers and builders.

“We are the largest yacht carrier in North America,” said Johnson’s boss and United Yacht Transport President Paul Haber.”In less than two years, we have gone from a start-up company into the North American market leader. United Yacht has shipped more yachts and run more sailings between the east and west coasts of North America in the last year than any other carrier.”

Haber is excited at the amount of business pouring in and says much of that business had to do with the popular waters of the Pacific Northwest.

“This weekend in Port Everglades, we are loading what will be a record sailing for us. It is our largest westbound North American sailing in UYT’s history. We have a large ship, M/V Tong AN Cheng and it is completely full, with 15 boats going to Victoria. We are also the only carrier to have an eastbound sailing from Victoria this year. We are making Victoria a priority as this Pacific Northwest region is a growing market as a summer destination for yachts,” said Haber.

But don’t think because Johnson is selling space on transport vessels, that he is hanging up his captain’s hat. No way.

“One of my stipulations is that I still love going to sea and so I do deliveries and relief work still. I just took a 140 foot research vessel from Moss Landing in California to Panama,” he said.

One of his fondest memories goes back to the beginning of his career in 1977.

“I was a deckhand on a 96-foot yacht based in Seattle. (Comedian) Bob Hope chartered the yacht, got on it in Seattle and we went up to Sydney, B.C. and tied up next to what turned out to be John Wayne’s yacht, the ‘Wild Goose.’ I was shammying the deck of the boat and John Wayne walked up and said hello,” Johnson said.

That was the start of long stream of celebrities and other power people he has encountered, adventures he has experienced and indelible memories of trips on the sea that are forever ingrained in his psyche.

If you happen to be walking the docks in the Pacific Northwest, gazing longingly at boats, you may well run into him, with a phone in his ear and an eye on the ships. He’ll regale you with stories that just might give you the boating fever.

“Your company handled the transport my 84 ft. Northcoast from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Ensenada, Mexico.  Even though we had to deal with several logistical complications prior to shipment, I very much appreciate how you personally stepped in and managed the process in a smart and professional manner.  As this was my first experience in shipping a boat by sea, I had many concerns early on.  You and your United team guided us through the process seamlessly,” Emelio Castaneda describes his experience as he spoke to Paul Haber, President of United Yacht Transport.
